What is menadione in dog food?

Menadione shows up near the end of many ingredient lists. It often sits in the long list of vitamins. The name sounds odd, so people look it up. Some posts online say the EU banned it. The EU rule text says something else.

What is menadione?

Menadione is a form of vitamin K made in a lab. Pet food makers add it so the food has enough vitamin K. Your dog needs vitamin K for blood to clot, which is how a cut stops bleeding. On a label, it may be called “menadione sodium bisulfite complex” or “menadione nicotinamide bisulfite.”

There are three main kinds of vitamin K. One comes from green plants. One is made by germs in the gut. The third is menadione, which is made in a lab. The body turns menadione into a form it can use, says a review by AAFCO, the group that writes model pet food rules.

Why is menadione in dog food?

It is there to add vitamin K. Plants give some vitamin K, and gut germs make some too. But dogs eat fewer plants than cows or horses do. Their gut may also make less. So many dog foods add a vitamin K source, and menadione is a common pick.

The AAFCO review says dogs and cats may make less vitamin K in the gut than horses or cows. That is one reason pet food makers add it.

Is menadione banned in the EU?

No. This is a common myth. The EU allows two forms of menadione in feed for all animals, and dogs are not left out. Workers who handle it at the plant must wear gloves and masks. That rule is about the people at the plant, not your dog.

Here is what the rules say. In 2015, the EU passed a rule that lets both forms of menadione go in feed for all animal species. The rule does not list any animal that is left out. It sets no top limit on how much can go in the food either.

That 2015 rule was set to run to the end of 2025. Makers asked for it to be renewed in 2024. EU law keeps an approval in place while a renewal is still being decided.

The rule does have limits. Both forms must be mixed into a premix first, not added on their own. The rule also tells plant workers to wear gloves, masks and eye cover. EU experts say breathing it in or touching it is a risk for them. One form was not approved to go straight into an animal’s water, because the maker dropped that request. That is about water, not dog food.

In 2025, the EU food safety office checked menadione again. Its experts said it is still safe for the animals that eat it, for people who eat food from those animals, and for the planet. They did warn again about workers breathing in or touching it.

Is menadione safe for dogs?

At the levels used in pet food, food safety experts in both the EU and the US say it is fine for animals. The big worries come from much higher doses. They also come from shots in the vein. Ask your vet about your own dog’s health.

The FDA says menadione can be added at up to 1,000 times what an animal needs with no bad effects seen, except in horses. The FDA also says it is widely used in pet foods.

In 2021, AAFCO asked a panel of experts to look at it. The panel said one form of menadione may be used as a safe source of vitamin K for all animals in the US. The harm seen in lab tests came from doses far higher than any dog food uses, or from shots.

So why do some owners still avoid it? Some just want foods with fewer lab-made items. That is a fair choice to make. But it is a choice, not a rule. If you have a worry, talk it over with your vet.

How can you spot menadione on a label?

Look near the end of the ingredient list, in the part with the vitamins and minerals. Menadione often shows up with a long name, like “menadione sodium bisulfite complex.”

Other items with long names sit in that same part of the list. Some are there to keep food fresh, like BHA (a lab-made item that keeps fat fresh) and BHT (a close kin of it). Others add taste, like natural flavor. A long name does not tell you if an item is good or bad.
