What are BHA and BHT in dog food?

BHA and BHT are two preservatives. Both are made in a lab. They stop the fat in food from going stale. Fat that goes stale smells and tastes bad. You will often see the two names side by side. Rules only allow tiny amounts of them.

BHA is short for butylated hydroxyanisole. BHT is short for butylated hydroxytoluene.

BHA is one of the main preservatives in animal feed. It helps keep fats and vitamin A from going bad. People food uses BHA too, in things like cereal and chips.

Is BHA in dog food bad for dogs?

The answer is not simple. Rules in the US and the EU still allow it in dog food at small amounts. But a US health report lists BHA as something that may cause cancer in people. That listing is based on tests in lab animals. Your vet is the best person to ask about your own dog.

The US National Toxicology Program writes a report on things that may cause cancer. It says BHA is “reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen.” That means it may cause cancer in people. BHA was first put on the list in 1991.

Here is what that is based on. Rats, male mice and hamsters fed BHA got tumors in the forestomach.

The same report says the data in people is not enough to judge. One study of people in the Netherlands found no rise in stomach cancer at normal diet amounts.

How much BHA and BHT does the FDA allow in pet food?

The FDA calls BHA and BHT safe in animal food when used in small amounts. The limit is based on how much fat is in the food. One cap covers all of these added up. It is a tiny share of the fat.

The FDA rule says BHA is safe when all such preservatives add up to no more than 0.02 percent of the fat or oil in the food. The rule for BHT sets the same cap.

The FDA is now taking a fresh look. In 2026, it asked for new facts on BHA in people food. A few months later in 2026, it did the same for BHT. Both notices are about people food. Neither one says the FDA has found them unsafe.

Is BHA banned in Europe?

No, not for dogs. The EU allows BHA in feed for every animal except cats. There is a cap on how much can be used. EU experts noted that a cat’s body is slow to break down this kind of chemical. They could not find a safe amount for cats.

The EU rule allows up to 150 mg of BHA per kg of complete feed, and when BHA and BHT are used together, the mix has the same cap. That rule runs until 2030.

The EU food safety agency, EFSA, checked it first. It found BHA fine for dogs at up to 150 mg per kg of feed, but it could not set a safe amount for cats. For BHT, EFSA judged it safe for chickens and pigs. For other animals, such as dogs, it said there was not enough data to decide.

The EU has its own rules for other pet food items too. One is menadione (a lab-made form of vitamin K).

How can you tell if a dog food has BHA or BHT?

Look at the ingredient list. US rules say a food with an added preservative must name it and say what it does. So you will see the name, then words like “a preservative.” Read the whole list, not just the top few lines.
